Resources and Strategies to Help Youth Quit Vaping

E-cigarettes expose your lungs to nicotine as well as other harmful chemicals and substances. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug. This makes breaking the habit of vaping challenging. It’s important to seek strategies and resources that can help you quit vaping. 

 

Truth Initiative provides “This is Quitting” which is an anonymous text message system used to help teens and young adults stop vaping. They incorporate messages from other young people that have previously attempted or successfully quit using e-cigarettes. By doing this they show the ups and downs of quitting, this helps drive young people to quit. They provide support and motivation to those quitting. This system also uses tips based off of authentication to send to the texter along with strategies to quit and stay free of tobacco products. They also provide resources for adults or parents of vapers.

 

“EX” is a digital platform that offers a broad web and mobile tools. This allows parents access to an online community that can support them. They also have a website they can interact with to provide information about nicotine and how it works, along with a variety of strategies to quitting. 

 

The National Cancer Institute gives an abundance of strategies to help you quit vaping. 

  • They recommend creating a plan to map out your path to quitting so that it is easier to stick to the plan and stay focused. 
  • Realizing the dangers of vaping and how it affects you. With more knowledge of the dangers you can discover what you want to do to become vape free. 
  • Know your reasons for quitting. This can help with becoming motivated and focused. 
  • Imagine yourself vape free. By doing this you can separate vaping from you. 
  • Learn triggers that make you want to vape. When quitting there will be things that remind you of vaping, knowing what can triggers can help you avoid them. 
  • Keep your mind busy to avoid thinking about vaping. 
  • Be active. Staying active can help boost your mood. 
  • Do something you like. Doing things you enjoy can help your mood. 
  • Feel free to ask for help. Telling those close to you when you’re quitting can build a support system. 
  • Treat yourself. To help with motivation and make the process more enjoyable.
